Those signing bonuses usually go with a job, a mos, and the large ones usually require you to sign up for 6 to 8 years. For example if they need truck drivers they will offer a 10,000 bonus for 6 years of service, 40,000 for 8 years, and 5,000 for 4 years. They also give bonuses to attract people who have special skills like if you are bilingual.
Also remember this no matter how long you sign up for you are really singing up for 8 years. You do your 4 and get out you still are in the IRR Inactive Ready Reserve. I could get a letter tomorrow telling me to report to a base to train for 3 months and go to Afghanistan.
You will have to be away from your girl for a little bit while you train, but it goes fast. I loved the military, and as soon as I am done with school I am going back as an officer. Check out the air force reserves, because air force personnel live good.
