- Mon Dec 21, 2009 8:32 am #163143 Crashed the back bumper, I'm assumming the back bumper is plastic? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I dunno why the paint just chipped and peeled, is this because it's plastic?


Now I wanna repair this damage, would the best way be to sand it all off and re-spray it?


Does anyone have a DIY on this? I need all the steps, all the equipment needed, I have never done this before. Hope you can help

Unless you've got some experience with bodywork id suggest getting a replacement, depending on how bad yours is. If you do decide to repair yours remember to plastic prime any bare plastic otherwise the new paint wont stick

just spray before you base/clear

it usually comes with full instructions on it

bulldog works very well for me

How about the sanding process, which sandpaper I use and how do I do it?

- Fri Dec 25, 2009 12:02 am #163989 if the new bumper doesn't need any work, you dont need sandpaper

use a grey scuff pad and i like to use a scuff paste specifically for different plastic bumpers that helps remove any oils from the plastic

wet the scuff pad, put the paste on the pad and scuff away

don't let the paste dry, sprinkle some water on it as you go if you notice it starting to dry

make sure you get every area so you don't have a problem with paint chipping/peeling off in corners or edges later on

rinse the whole bumper off, then wash the bumper like you would wash the car, rinse it, completely dry it off (inside and out)

tape off what you dont want painted, spray adhesion promoter (bulldog),
let that flash for a few minutes, then spray your basecoat in light coats letting it flash between coats, depending on how light/heavy the coats are

once your ready for clear you can check the base to make sure there arent any nibs/hairs in it, if there is you can pull them out and lightly sand the area if needed, rebase over again and your ready for clear

i usually lay the first coat of clear a little dry, making sure i get all the egdes or any hard to get at places, let that flash then give it a nice wet second coat

depending on conditions, type of bumper, type of base, type of clear

- Sat Dec 26, 2009 4:58 pm #164170 So what your saying is, you should only sand your bumper if the bumper is damaged? If it just paint peeling off and bumper hasn't been damaged don't sand?

So what I do is peel all the paint off and then wax and greaser remove all the things, plastic primer, paint and clear coat?

- Sun Dec 27, 2009 12:47 am #164204 if the paint is peeling/chipping off i have used compressed air with blow gun or a pressure washer to blow off as much of the paint as you can, then feather edge whats left

and im really not sure what your referring to when you say plastic primer

i have used bumper and cladding coat and adhesion promoter

i prefer adhesion promoter

i have done side skirts and bumpers with bulldog adhesion promoter and flex agent in the clear... one person on each end of the pieces and twisted more then you would experience on the road and not crack/chip/peel


When it comes right down to it, wherever you are buying your products you should ask for what they recommend and for some tech sheets on the products you are going to use

im pretty horrible at trying to explain how to do these things over the internet
