Honda wouldn't change springs and retainers if they didn't need to. If your going to take full advantage of the Type-R Cams, Getting the springs/retainers is good piece of mind.

I wouldn't personally spin upto 9k with out them. Can it be done? Yes. Is it smart to? No.

I would highly HIGHLY recommend a tune, Even a street tune(Which is what my hatch has). You will get much more power of your engine, And give your engine the needed fuel and ignition mappings that it needs for the new cams. If you decide to not get a tune done, then your fuel cut will stop at 8k anyways.

I would say get a street tune before putting in Type-R Cams and then save up for type-r or skunk2 springs/retainers. maybe sell the exhaust cam as it only adds 1 hp anyways and use that money to get the spings/retainers.

ill probably just hold out and get the whole setup anyways for safety is it worth all the troubgle though power wise?

#165522 To go from GSR to ITR cams, I would call it a little much, but not unecessary. It would only help. It would be absolutely necessary, however, if you were to go to the aftermarket for some higher lift cams to prevent valve float at higher RPM. Even at 8k, you can get valve float if you're not properly equipped. Remember, 8,000 crankshaft RPM = 4,000 camshaft RPM. If you're running 4k camshaft RPM, your valves are being slammed open and shut 4,000 times per minute each.

No amount of ECU tuning can make a GSR motor safe to rev to 9500. You will blow that motor, period.

Physically the motor needs to be modified in the block and in the head to be able to rev that high. But even then... nothing overcomes the old adage for RPM, Ruins People's Motors.

It's somewhat pointless to put Type R cams in a GSR head because the design of the GSR head and intake manifold are opposite of the Type R. The GSR was designed for a flat power curve starting in the low RPM. The type R was designed for all out peak power. The GSR head has small ports and a dual stage manifold so that most of the time it has long, small diameter ports for the air to flow through.

My recommendation is to get a B16 head, or just get a whole Type R engine. As for your GSR, the best thing in the world for it would be a supercharger. It would absolutely kill on the track and on the street. If it's a dedicated drag vehicle, then LS/VTEC for NA or a turbo build is the way to go.
