d16y5 is a vtec-e motor. It will bolt in but will be a ton of work to wire up in an obd1 car. There's not even an obd1 ecu that will run that motor I don't think. So that's out.
The d16y8 can be done. It's also an obd2 motor, but can be run with a p28 (d16z6) ecu. There's a knock sensor on the block that you can ignore, a cfk sensor near the crank pulley you can ignore, and you will want to use a distributor from a D15b7 on the y8 head so that will plug right into your OBD1 engine harness. There's an evap purge sensor on the intake manifold that you can ignore, and you'll need to extend the wires to reach the AIT sensor on the y8. The injectors are OBD2 so you'll have to wire obd2 injector clips on your harness, or use d16z6 injectors with your obd1 harness. The alternator on the y8 has a square plug, obd1 alternators have a round plug, so might wanna get a 92-95 alternator or switch plugs if you want to go that route. There's some extra vacuum lines on the intake manifold that you can plug, depending on the year of y8. Also, get a manual y8. the autos have the IACV built into the throttle body.
I think that's it. looks like a lot but it's all little things. The d16y5 would be 20x harder because you would need to convert the car to OBD2 to run the vtec-e head on that motor.

edit: also I believe the p28 ecu is 4° more advanced than the y8 or something like that, so an adjustable cam gear may be needed. I'm not sure about getting by with swapping cam gears around...
