intake manifold question

- Tue Apr 06, 2010 7:58 pm #185907 hi ppl.im watching this forum for a while and learned some good things, bute this i couldnt find it anywhere so here it is.i have a '92 civic vx and i want to instal an intake manifold but i dont know if it will fit on my d15z1. on the products specs it says "fits only on d15 d16 engines"
And i have another problem, my d15 has an egr valve and i dont see an brachet or anything for the egr on the new manifold.

- Tue Apr 06, 2010 8:33 pm #185913 You can put a z6 intake on it but you will have to remove the egr valve and some other vac. parts. I just swaped out my z1 to a z6 complete motor.

- Tue Apr 06, 2010 8:38 pm #185914 the D15z1 is optimized for fuel economy and not performance. Putting on a different intake manifold (aftermarket or from other D series) will hurt fuel economy and the car won't be much, if any, faster.


So while it may bolt up to your head (all d16, d15 intake manifolds use the same bolt pattern) it may not do your engine any good to make it worth your time/money. Also sometimes you run into issues where some use a round vs a square coolant port on the flange.

x2, all the vx and in later years hx were made for economy... honestly he said it all nothing else left to say :thumb:

- Wed Apr 07, 2010 3:33 pm #186080 I agree. And you're going to get a CEL for EGR which puts the ECU into limp mode. Even if you got around that, the car would run like ass. The VX is very tightly optimized and does not handle changes very well. I had a tiny vacuum leak and it bucked like crazy.

Even a simple intake pipe is a bad idea because it costs you power in the low low RPM that car is designed to run at.

- Wed Apr 07, 2010 7:55 pm #186134 not what you want to hear, but swapping in a different engine is the best way to make power in your car.

I suppose you could try nitrous or a smaller turbo, but to make it a reliable setup, it will likely cost more than a D16z6 engine.

Another option to look into is a Mini-me swap, which is putting a vtec head/intake manifold and p28 ecu on your D15z1 block. If you can get the parts cheap and you're looking for 20-30 more HP, then this may be the way to go.

- Wed Apr 07, 2010 8:27 pm #186140 Agreed, just like everybody is saying. You can would be better of swaping the motor. If you do it yourself you could spend about 650 for everything and have, like teal said, 20-30 more hp. I started with the d15z1 and swaped to the D16z6.

- Wed Apr 07, 2010 9:02 pm #186154 i want to keep my d15z1.im tryng to raise his power without major modications like minime or swap.the reason im doing this is cuz i cant find reliable sh parts in my country an d the new ones are too expensive.and i think a an increase of 5-10 hp is ok for me in this conditions.so what can i do to gain this increase?

- Wed Apr 07, 2010 9:42 pm #186162 You could do things to make your car accelerate faster without increasing HP such as lighter wheels (although the VX wheels are already abot 9 lbs which is very light. but if you have heavy aftermarket wheels, switching back to the VX wheels should make a difference)
Swap in a D16z6 manual transmission - this will make a BIG difference in acceleration with the shorter gears.
Strip the car of any extra weight (rear seat, spare tire & jack, Air conditioning, sound deadening etc - although I wouldn't go this route unless you're building an all out track car.)
You could install a K&N filter, intake and exhaust. You may gain a couple of peak HP, but the loss of backpressure may cost you some HP in the mid-low power range - the range you use on a daily basis.

Keeping your engine well tuned will help out the most. Maintenance such as plugs, wires, cap, rotor will keep the engine running most effecient.

there's NOTHING that you can "bolt on" to that motor to get more power out of it. Even if you swapped the head for a mini-me, that block is the weakest of any of the D15's. not sure if its rods could even handle it safely...


start saving and get a complete motor swap. a D16Z6 or D15B vtec that will bolt right in :thumb:



EDIT: what teals saying will definitely help a bunch if you must keep the motor..
