Turbo and Supercharger discussion

#211198 So I'm posting for my friend. He recently scored a rather large turbo for free that was sitting in another friend's garage, never taken out of packaging.

He bought a garret rebuild kit and had it rebuilt by a company out here in springfield.

Now the important part. Its going on a stock D16Y8. Hes tuning it on crome gold and was shooting for around 200whp. Doesn't this seem like too large of a turbo for something this mild?

#211215 Do you think he'll get the boost bug and crank up his boost controller? Because that turbo is way more capable than 200 HP

If 200 is the max, I'd sell it for something smaller and end up with some extra cash.

#211280 Yeah I agree. Sell that turbo and get something smaller. With a mild build like that, a lower boost threshold is going to be a lot more fun. I have a d15/z6 minime making 181whp and it's a ton of fun, boost starts coming on @2200 ... that t3/t04 is going to spool late so unless he's running through the RPM's all the time he's not going to hit boost all that much or all that hard.

I'm running a td04h-13c off of a volvo. It's the same size as a small t3 or t25, honestly for a mild build like your friend is doing he'd be better off with a nice DSM t25, boost kicks in quick, maxes out fast, and pulls hard. They are solid little turbos, if he can find a junked eclipse and grab the turbo off of that and rebuild it ... he'll be all set. He can probably sell the bigger turbo he's got and get the new turbo, a rebuild kit, and have a little cash left over.

If you aren't looking for big power a big turbo is NOT the way to go.
