So I'm having this repetitive knocking/ticking sound at low RPMS (around 1000-2500 RPMS). It only happens when in gear, and right after hitting ~2500 RPMS, it disappears. I thought it would go away when the engine warmed up, but it still does the same repetitive knocking sound. Any ideas? I'm asking you guys first before I put money in to have a shop take a look at it (to get specific areas for the mechanic to take a look at. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

If it occurs just when in gear with your foot off the clutch, then I would say it is the input shaft bearing of the transmission.

wouldn't the input shaft bearing keep making noise at higher rpm's??

I have never had a throw-out bearing make noise when my foot was off the clutch.
When my input-shaft bearing was bad, it only made noise at lower speeds. I couldn't hear it at all at higher RPMs.

- Sun Sep 12, 2010 6:57 pm #213270 my boys integra does it when his foot is off the clutch. but as soon as he presses the clutch in it stops making noise.

and on my friends civic it does the same.
we have found out they both have bad throwout bearings

If the clutch is pushed down, the throw out bearing is spinning ageist the pressure plate, meaning noise would come from the throw out bearing.

If its the opposite, being the clutch is not being touched, the throw out bearing is not being used, the noise, would be a main input shaft bearing.

Also x2 on the not hearing noise at higher noises. maybe when the bearings totally toast it would but when it starts going out it was noticeable in the lower rev band for me.

- Wed Sep 15, 2010 6:11 am #213800 Thanks for the replies all! I checked again to be sure, the knocking sound is at low RPM's until ~2500 RPMS where it stops. I hear it more in 2nd and 3rd gear. If fully throttled at low RPM's, the noise is a lot more noticeable. Would this still be the main input shaft bearing?

If it makes any difference, I hear the noise often since I shift at ~1500 RPM hitting ~2500 RPM before I shift again (I love saving gas, even IF our cars are already getting 30+ mpg )

Mine is making the same noise.. But also in Auto..

Can you describe the symptoms a little more?
What sounds are you hearing?
When do you hear it?

Since you both have automatic transmissions, I would look at your CV joints. They will "Knock" at low speeds when bad.

- Thu Nov 18, 2010 6:16 pm #223481 i said low rpms not speed. (the axles wont make noise when its in park.....) also i have already had a valve adjustment. only thing i can think is its out of time a little. cause i notices mine slighly backfires when i am slowing down..
