D15, D16, D17 and Mini-Me swaps

#233882 Hey guys,

I've had my engine rebuilt almost a year ago, race bearings replaced, rings etc. Mostly all OEM parts. Just the crank and pistons were not changed.

However, I'm in two minds. I want a bit more power, but (some of you may not like this), I was thinking of moving to a B18.

Or the second option, rather than going through all that hassle of D to B swap, take my d16z6 out, do a bay clean up, possibly a semi wire tuck. While the engine is out, what could I do to gain a bit more power from my engine? I was initially going down the turbo route but have now decided to remain N/A.

I've heard that I could get an adjustable fuel regulator which I could then get a remap perhaps and gain a bit more power that way?

Any suggestions on what route to take or what I can do with my engine would be appreciated.

Thanks!

#233891 It's possible to get more power out of that little D. I just got done rebuilding my d16z6 as well a few weeks ago and i am considering going turbo, but I mite stick to n/a. In all honesty people underestimate the d series. It's really up to you on how much hp and what numbers you want. If u want to unleash a lil more hp then I would do a head Job. Like change out the valve springs, get a new after market cam, new valves, do a 3 angle valve job, port and polish. There is quiet a few options here. You won't make huge numbers unless you really redo the bottom end start all over which I don't think you wanna do since you just rebuilt it unless you have more money to throw into it or go turbo. You have options here, just depends on how far you wanna take it and how big the wallet is lol. Just my input

this is exactly what I was thinking. if you're going to want even more power eventually, might as well go turbo D or B18 now before you sink $$$ into a NA D16.

#234065 Hmm, interesting!

Truth is, I have a soft spot with my D. I've been in a Teg B18C, the difference was quite a bit. In fact the Teg felt quite a bit quicker than the CTR I drove.

Basically, I'm not looking to get the same bhp as say a B18, but perhaps looking to gain an extra 10-30bhp on my N/A. I was also looking to go the turbo route but I didn't want any reliability issues, and to have it done properly with good parts etc would cost a bit much.

Also I have an Exeedy clutch, OEM flywheel and I find my car uncomfortable to drive when in traffic when I'm constantly stop/starting etc. Would I solve this problem by having an OEM clutch too? Also I get clunking noises when decelerating/accelerating and engaging gear but that'll probably be down to worn mounts.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

#234205 id say stick with the d heres some ideas for na build if you wanna do a little bit of engine work
take the head off and have it shaved .020 or .030 that ups your compression to around 9.7 to 1 wich is a good compression for a dd
heres my .02 cents on the z6 head
buy a jdm d15b cam and put it in the z6 head it will help with power alot more than you would think
or send your z6 cam into delta and have the do a regrind to a 272 profile its only 95 bucks and worth every penny from what i have heard
orr if you wanted to build a motor on the side and swap it in over a weekend for a nice little high compression motor
buy a b7 block cheap rebuild it and then get a z6 head and shave it .010 that will give you 10.5 to 1 compression wich is a nice compression bump and you will feel it
just to give you ideas
if you wanna build a d series motor play around with the compression calc at zealauotworks.com

This is good advice
Its a more aggressive cam but with the z6 displacement
Ive wanted to see this benefit myself
Its no bisi cam but its oem, better and probably cheaper
