Timing pointer question

- Sat Sep 03, 2011 6:13 pm #270248 Ok, when I got my eg8 it ran terrible. it appeared to be timed wrong on the cam and ignition. It looked like it was a tooth off, so I adjusted it and retimed the ignition. My issue is that according to the timing pointers, my cam is 1/2 a tooth off. are the pointers off? my tensioner bolt is accessable through the hole so im thinking that i have the right belt but if I do have the right belt then do i need an adjustable cam gear? Please enlighten me on this issue. It doesnt run bad but if I get into full throttle I can hear the engine through the air filter so i know that something isnt right with this.

what do you mean "hear the engine through the air filter"?

And what motor?

- Sun Sep 04, 2011 3:27 am #270303 When your engine is running it is breathing through your air box/filter and once you are full throttle the amount of air increases which I think you are hearing.

Is your car running like crap is it just fine no bogging or lagging etc ?

What motor are you running the stock d15b7 ?

- Mon Sep 05, 2011 4:24 pm #270452 It should be all stock. I know its not a mini me. the block says d15b7 and im assuming the head matches. When I say I "hear the engine through the air filter" I mean that theres an excess of noise through the air filter, not just vacuum. but, my cam lines are never DEAD on. This is my first import, im used to american muscle using timing chains. So, this is a whole new world with belts and fwd. I have read that theres several similar belts that the d series uses, and they have different teeth counts but are very close. would a different tooth count belt cause this issue?

- Mon Sep 05, 2011 10:01 pm #270499 Ok .. is there a vtec solenoid on the head in the left corner of the head if your standing in front of your car . If not it should be the stock d15b7 head with the spark plug ports in the rear of the head .

Does your cam gear say pm3 ? Are you referring to the diaganol line on the bottom left of the cam gear that should line up with the pointer on the timing cover for the head correct ?

You might just need to replace the belt if the marks have been reset and they are not lining up correctly but I dont really think half a tooth would cause that much of an issue . Correct me if I'm wrong gentleman.

Is your performance suffering since you heard this noise ?

I have no basis for comparison, this is my first import and I havent owned a 4 banger in years. All I know is that my timing pointer on the cam isnt exactly where it should be. When I got the car it ran terribly. It couldnt even make it up a small hill without downshifting. It would barely do 70. now its not bad but I want to make sure its running like it should be.

- Tue Sep 06, 2011 4:16 pm #270585 When you have the upper timing cover off next time, can you snap & post a pic of the cam gear just to be sure it is the correct one for the motor?

Also it could be possible that someone put the wrong timing belt on the motor, but then it would be too loose or tight. Too loose can lead to it jumping a tooth and too tight can shorten the belt's lifespan.
