Turbo and Supercharger discussion

#269265 Just make sure nothing is wrong with the motors from the junkyard. If you put rods, rings and pistons but want to turbo it later on then buy low comp. pistons. LS VTEC is a nice motor, the only true 1.8L motor as well. So do it, post a build thread. :thumb:

Just know if you dont know a lot about Hondas and working on them then putting a motor together is going to be a bit more difficult than you think, but we are all here to help if you have any questions.

#271350 ok sooo...i got an ls motor from a friend for FREE :thumb: ....it has the computer, distributor, intake mani, just about everything BUT the wire harness...and it apparently has a low end knock....but like i said ....FREE...so i figured i might as well do up the whole motor with the money i saved on not having to buy it...i havnt had a chance to take it apart and look at it yet ...does anyone have any suggestions on what the knock might be??and any suggestions on if i should make a ls/v or just work the balls out of what i have now??

#271392 My money is on the knock being from a rod. If thats the cause, you can have the crank turned or you can find a good condition crank and use that. Personally I'd try to find a good condition crank.

As far as LSV, I feel you'd make more power, more efficiently if you went LSV. Personally, I'd go LSV.

#271482 ive been leaning towards LSV ..but wasnt sure if i can get the same power in an LS for cheaper or something...and whats the best way to acquire a new crank??? junk yard, aftermarket from online, OEM, etc.???and as far as price for a crank im not TOO concerned because id rather spend the extra money to get something that can be well trusted and reliable...any suggestions??

#271513 Cant beat a stock crank, should be easy to find. I've pulled from engines at the junkyards, bought em off forums and used craigslist... just gotta open your eyes and find em!

#271527 so the best thing for me to do is get a stock one from somewhere??...i was thinking what if i got a dif crank..like from a gsr or something...or does it not fit in my ls block....or even it is defeating the purpose of dong an LS/V swap??...sorry if thats a dumb question but im still learning here :?

a gsr crank would work fine in an LS block. it'll destroke it to whatever a GSR is. you'll need GSR [length] rods. other than that it'll work fine.

#271553 but from my understanding it will give me more compression...and isnt more compression better??..or am i mistaken?

#271752 LSV motors are great, but you should stick with an LS if you are looking to boost. Way less of a headache.

#271758 most would argue that higher compression on a turbo build is a bad idea. there are a few who will disagree w/that.

it all depends on the pistons.

#272080 How do you think those 1100+whp hondas get that kind of power? Surely not from 8:1 comp. More like 9:1, 9.5:1 maybe more.

X 2 I talked to some boys with fully sleeved drag motors at a track day at MIR before and all of them were in the 9.8:1 to 10:1 range it kinda blew my mind till I really thought about it, most people harp on 9:1 pistons as being the best for a boost setup,

but really the more compression you can run and your block hold it the better off you are that's my .o2

#272097 well my plan is to SLOWLY build this motor from scratch....(not sure if i will follow through with a FULL rebuild...) but point is..i can put a gsr crankshaft in my ls motor and get the rod length i need and a nice set of pistons...it would be the best idea..especially for boost..??

true, most of the locals do the typical CP 9:1 pistons and eagle rods. pretty much what the shop cars around here use as well. I guess you could say 9:1 seems to be a favorite, around my parts.
