- Mon Nov 14, 2011 6:09 am #281406 Hey I have a d15z1 and I love the motor but she is burning oil. When I bought it it was just a little when I was getting on it but now its starting to get to be all the time. So the question is what brand parts should I use. I like to order off of rockauto.com because they are cheap and fast delivery.

I have never done a rebuild before but I am pretty confident in my mechanical skills. The thing is I dont really know what I would be doing other than replacing piston rings valve seals and a head gasket. I have heard that it is a good idea to have the cylinders re-honed. Any input would be great I am thinking of doing it this winter.

If you are going to rebuild it then yes get the cylinders re-honed, I don't think it is something you HAVE to do but it wouldn't hurt. New spark plugs, wires etc would be nice as well. Just an all around tune up

How many miles does it have? You may want to have a machine shop check the cylinders for roundness. Eventually the cyls can ever so slightly oval which is a good reason to bore .020 before honing. Get them honed at least - it would be pointless not too while you already have the bottom end apart.

Rockauto is cheap but I would rather go with OEM Honda parts if you plan on having this motor for a long time. Honda's tolerances are tighter and quality is higher than the chinese parts Rockauto sells.

- Tue Nov 15, 2011 1:35 am #281474 Well I really like having the d15z1 because all I use it for is a commuter and I have gotten 55mpg with it. I did think of doing a frankenstein build like robster did but kinda afraid of that big of a build. Teal the motor has 212000 or so on the motor (the speedo went out on it for a while). Well I am going to price everything out and see if I am going to rebuild or I just found a 95 vx all stock and clean for cheap. My vx needs some body work so it would be a trade up but then I might be in the same issue on needing to rebuild the motor.

If I end up having to bore .020 over does that call for new pistons or can you get rings that will make up for it?

also for pricing out my rebuild these are the parts I have on my list please let me know if I over looked anything

piston rings
Full engine gasket kit
new head bolts
water pump
I think that the gasket kits come with valve seals
that is all I can think of I know I am missing stuff

- Tue Nov 15, 2011 4:15 am #281487 I actually did a decent tune up about a month ago plugs, wires, oil, filter, cap, rotor, pcv, timing belt, and tensioner. I didnt think of the water pump untill I was puting it all back together and kinda kicked my self but now I have another chance to change it
