Buying or building turbo kits?

- Mon Nov 12, 2007 1:04 am #29436 which would you guys prefer.. i know it comes out cheaper building your own (buying piece by piece) i mean is it worth it?

how does a used turbo work diffrently from a new 1? any diffrences at all?

- Mon Nov 12, 2007 4:15 am #29453 how much you have to spend? you looking for top or mid power? Choose ball bearing or journal if you have less $$. when buying used, check the compressor wheel for shaft play, there should be little to none :thumb:
Piecing together your own kit will save you some $$ but keep in mind you will be doing hours and hours of research, not only installng the components, but also figuring out what parts work well with each other.

So a good way to put it... do you have more Time or Money?

oh and im only going for mid power... i dont wanna blow this b16 yet.. until i can afford a k20

- Fri Nov 16, 2007 5:37 pm #30241 Definitely build your own, you'll get so much more for less price. As far as a list you need to just research what a turbo kit has, its pretty simple actually but you need to make sure you have everything covered. For a basic list you need:

Turbo
Manifold, Downpipe
Intercooler, piping, couplers, clamps
Blowoff valve
Wastegate
Fuel (Injectors, EMS, fuel pump)
Exhaust
Oil Lines (Feed, drain, tee's, fittings)
Boost controller
Guages (Boost, wideband etc....)

These are basic things, as far was what to get. Just research what others have and what kind of power you want to make. I have a B18b and was shooting for a 250hp daily driver. I started looking on Honda-tech on what others have and power they made. I bought pieces here and there, buying reliable products (NO EBAY STUFF, except i heard intercoolers work well) and spent about $2400 total including tuning. Drag turbo kits go for about that price but can't make near the hp i make at the same boost level. I ended making 253whp/222wtq @8psi. and last will be a good tune for any car its all on the tune to make it reliable or not

I made myself a kit and tune for around 2400. (Which isnt much cheaper but it is a bigger turbo) and i had lots of room to grow. I also learned 10x more about turbos by mix/matching it myself.


reliability all comes with finding the right parts with the correct tune.

i have the greddy stickers on my enginebay..


I'm the only lowtec turbo-ed car running right now.

- Fri Dec 07, 2007 5:39 pm #32671 well i actually talked to a couple shop owners, that a complete honest guys. and they said as lnog as its new, they understand that the ebay turbo kits arnt the greatest. but with a professional installing/tuning they will work just fine

he actually even admitted, for the price. thats fucking amazing of a deal...

my goal : is to be turbo'd by the start of january :thumb: will definetly have a million pics :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

going no name on the piping or even the intercooler is ok, but the turbo is the heart of the system. You don't want to cheap out there. Stick with names like Garrett, Precision, Turbonetics etc.... You get what you pay for :thumb:
