#325330 I'm horrible at accounting. I can barely balance a check book.
I always paid an accountant to do wife's & my personal taxes plus my business taxes but his price has gone up each year. I'm thinking about giving turbo tax a try... :weee:

1. Is it dummy proof?

2. Does it have all the usual deductions (mortgage, dependent etc) AS WELL AS all of the odd ones (home improvements, vehicles, etc). Hoping there is a long list that I can look through and check off the ones that apply.

3. Does it take care of state and federal?

4. How long does it take to do taxes using TT? If I'm going to be sitting at a computer staring at accounting stuff for more than a few hrs, I'd rather just pay someone to do them.

#325334 you talking the free version? or paid?

#325335 I use it every year. It is really easy. The program was designed with ease in mind. All you do is enter the information it asks you for in certain boxes and answer yes or no to certain question

#325336 It has every possible deduction you can think of and some you had no clue existed. It takes 7-10 days for your refund to hit you bank if you efile. And yes it will do federal and state if you want to. Federal is free if you print the forms and mail you pay to efile. If you use turbo tax to do state taxes then you pay no matter what so you might as well efile. They take their fee out of your return.

#325345 Yup we always use the federal free edition online. And use it to file our state as well for like 30$ Big tax places want 150$ or more to do taxes for a family. No thanks.

#325349 ^^^. That's why I use it. I own a house, 4 cars, go to college, have a inheritance, and stocks. The last time I paid someone to do my taxes it cost me $465. Turbo tax costs me $60. This is rustyrex btw.

#325400 I may give it a shot then... I know I have to do my small business ones first, then once that is done I can do the state and then the fed. I figure I am gonna have a lot of deductions, mutual funds, business write-offs... So I'll definitely need to buy the full $60 version, right? Or is there a more robust version I would need to do all that? (mine + wife + small business with federal tax ID #)

I do not have a business. But one of the good things about turbo tax products is when you look over the different versions they tell you exactly what they do and are for. And its all step by step, its like following a gps turn by turn, you can go back and forward and review a million times if you wish before you efile.
