#330399 I am looking to buy a DSLR since my photog buddy sold his camera. I planned on just letting him use the one I buy (doesn't need to be great). But I want it to be something that I can understand and will have many years of fun with..

That being said, can some of you photography guys school me a bit on what to look for?
1. should i buy a body and lens separate?
2. is 10mpx that much better than 12?

here's my purchase parameters:
- under $500 for everything
- would like HD video capability
- would like standard lens
- would like adaptability with better lenses down the line
- would like something with simple "controls"

#330542 I think a viable option to consider is probably checking out any local pawn shops, I think you'll find a good camera that fits your requirements and your price range.
Personally I think if you can find a body with a lens I'd say go for it unless you want a specific type.
And 12 megapixel will be higher resolution than 10, both of which you have no problem finding for a reasonable price. :)

1. depending on the deal you find.. either way is a good option. (check amazon, thats where I've bought a body and few of my lenses)
2. It all depends on if you're trying to blow your pictures up... if you're going to be maxing out the size to make say a poster or whatever.. then yeah it makes a difference. but for normal everyday pictures and shooting you wont really see a difference.

#330714 I recommend a Canon T2i (Rebel), they don't sell them in the shops anymore but you an find them anywhere online second hand or craigslist

18 megapixels!
Awesome 1080p full HD recording, better then most camcorders. Best thing is it's all manual control

TV commercial shot with the T2i

#330716 not sure how i feel about all manual controls as a beginning dslr user. i kinda still want the functionality out the box with little to no knowledge.

They still have Auto and other settings depending on what you're shooting, portrait, landscape. Pictures still look flawless with auto settings!

#331211 with your budget go with an all in one package...don't get just the body because it will run you more. The lenses run almost as much as the camera itself FYI. 12mp or higher will be fine and make sure you get a camera with OPTICAL ZOOM not digital. Digital zoom is not actually zooming, its enlarging the picture which is degrading the quality of the picture.

I am getting a Nikon D3100 any day now...just waiting for it to be delivered. This will be my first one too but I did some research and this is a good one for beginners...under 500 at best buy
