But they also said it didn't appear to be a suicide, despite there being copious amounts of sleeping pills around him.

My mom said that she saw something about the sleeping pills on the news. I guess that he was taking a mix of prescription ones and then some OTC's and he must've accidentily overdosed. It's a shame. Such a young age. And he was a talented actor.
