D15, D16, D17 and Mini-Me swaps

#56076 I've had my EG for coming on 2 years now and I've finally decided to make the thing more fun to drive. Even though I've had it for a while I'd kind of passed it up as far as modding in favor of the cars in my sig so I'm still a bit of a Honda noob.

Anyways I wanted to post up my plan and get some opinions. I just picked up a torn down D16Z6 long block and a S40 ex trans. Heres what I was thinking...

D16A6 OE pistons (I think ~11:1 compression will result)
Comp cam.
Port and polish the head if it's beneficial
OE Z6 rods
Skunk2 valve springs.
Everything else OE.

What I'm looking for is a reliable DD and something I can take to the track once a month and beat the piss out of. As far as power I'd be happy with a low 15. Let me know what you think.

#56083 Thanks! I wasn't sure where to drop it.

#56095 also kind of wondering if i HAVE to run a SAFC or aftermarket ecu in order to drive this setup, or just generally if it'll work, or if anyones done a setup like this.

I would stay away from aftermarket hacks. a properly chipped stock ecu (p28 or p06 converted to P28) and a good tune is the way to go. SAFC, VAFC, etc are old technology.

#56258 I haven't heard of that, but I know a guy in Belgium installed stock D13 pistons in his mini-me D15 for somewhere between 12.5 and 13:1 c/r...

agreed. look up past thread on the Vtec controller syndrome. alot of good info will come out of you reading that.

#56943 Good info. I've used SAFCs for pretty much everything else I've owned but it sounds like the ability to adjust ignition timing is pretty important for Hondas. I'm prolly just gonna rebuild this joker stock and swap something else later.

#60958 use ARP head studs properly torqued and you will be good. OEM headgasket with copper spray if you want.
Then get a good tune and use the proper octane fuel for your setup :thumb:
