#74997 Hey I would like to have some feedback regarding VTEC engine oil. I am sure that we use different engine oils for our honda. I saw on other sites that the best for VTEC is 10W-30 while for non-vtec 15W-40 but it can chnge regarding where you live in.

#75007 I'd follow the directions in your car's manual, or some cars have it on the oil cap too. I'd be less concerned about what oil will make your vtec louder/more noticeable, and use the oil that is going to get the most life out of your engine

#75012 I run 10w-30 on mine, but I believe Honda recomends 5w-30. To be honest....there's not much difference between the two.

Unless you live in a cold weather climate like here in the winter

Chicago gets pretty freakin cold too though!! I've always just kept the 10w-30 in our cars. Maybe this year I'll switch it up just for shits and giggles.

do'nt get me wrong 10w-30 will work fine, but 5w-30 has a lower operating temp. then the 10w-30

#75047 I use 10w-30 Castrol GTX Magnatex, it has science backing the oil and you can't go wrong, never had an issue with it and turns your internals gold :D muhahahaha

#75061 I use either Castrol or Quaker State for my engine, it's non-vtec right now tho but I'm sure I'll use the same when I'm done with mini-me. I use 10w30 in summer and 5w30 in winter. :thumb:

   thats the worst idea ever, synthetic sucks unless its a freshly build motor, but for something thats got like 200xxxkms on it 10w30/5w30 is fine, if you are wanting to use synthetic a easy way to see if your car will burn it or not is to do an oil change and buy 5w20, cuz its really light weight oil. Or if you are rich or dont mind spending like 70 bucks for a oil change buy royal purple :thumb: that stuff is the shit, i had a knock in my engine and i did a oil change and used royal purple, the knock went away :thumb: :woot:, but thats my 2 cents

That is a REALLY thick setup. Do you race the engine to warrant that much protection? Only the few engines I know that run that weight is M power BMW. The dramatic change of viscosity must cost alot cause I know Castrol 10W60 for M is about $12/quart. I do not think the protection gain, is worth the premium on top of regular 10W-30.

where are you getting your information?

Synthetic oil has better resistance to breakdown at higher temperatures. This means the oil can withstand higher oil temperatures than dino oil (270F vs 230F). It also has better cold flow characteristics but it is NOT thinner than regular oil. 5W-30 syn is exactly the same as 5W-30 Syn. If you are burning oil in syn, but not dino, you have a problem that already existed and the syn is just merely the messenger. This should be taken care of instead of hiding the problem with regular oil as the problem can create larger problems. The benefits of a synthetic oil comes at a price. If you can justify it for your engine, go for it. If not, stick to regular. I run synthetic 10W30 as I live in warmer climates of California. You should be able to switch from syn and dino at any mileage of a healthy motor.

back to OP:
The reccomended value from your owners manual depending on your climate is perfectly fine. 5W30 for colder climates and 10W30 for warmer climates.

#75163 Its just that i drive my Honda in rally competitions (and on one race day, there is 5 or 6stages and each stage is like 20minutes of full-out driving....) And reason why i use only Castrol 10W60 is that everybody are using that oil for they race cars too in rally competition. And its most expensive oil u can buy (In Latvia) so i think it has to be good! :)
And i always changing it after 2500miles.... When u are changing oil guys?

That is actually a very good reason why to run 10w-60.

I actually follow whatever the manual recommends for oil change intervals. If you are racing the car in rallys like you say, I think an oil change PRIOR to raceday is good habit on top of your 2500mile interval.
