#96095 Time to start my project on my EG! For those who don't know already, I purchased one not too long ago off of ebay, which had an engine conversion from a 1.5 LSI Auto to a 1.6 VTEC Manual (D16Z6 engine).

I'll post up a few pictures which were the ones used to advertise as I haven't actually taken any myself due to camera issues heh. The car looks red'er in the flesh;

Bodywork needs touching up and on my journey home, I got half way then had to be AA'ed home. Not a good start. The top hose from the rad to the engine blew.

Went through the correct procedure in re-filling the rad and have done this countless times with help and have also had a few pair of eyes take a look at it and helped me to resolve this problem and what may of caused it (thx Spence!) and my water level continues to fall.

Sadly the worst case scenario is the problem I have, my head gasket has gone. Took it to a local garage and had a sniff test done on it and it turns out that the exhaust is flowing through the cooling system as well. So, few things need to be put right and stable before I spend cash on modifications.

No harm, however, in obtaining a few peoples advice and opinions. I'm looking to do a full respray to the car, I was thinking a gray colour, specifically I don't know what gray yet. I have a budget for this though, I'm willing to prep the car to be ready for a spray, all I want is someone who can obtain the paint and do a good spray job for a decent price. Budget being around £800-£1000. Obviously less if possible but possibly not a chance in hell. I wondered if anyone here has the skills to do the job, or know anyone with the skills that is happy to come to an agreement? :p

I've also had thoughts about keeping it red, but it'll need re-spraying in any case after a panel beater has been at the bodywork so...

Anyways, this is going to be an on-going project, look forward to peoples comments as I progress, I know there isn't much to go on now, but hopefully this weekend I can provide more detailed pictures and give you a much better idea on what I hope to accomplish with my EG. The image of the transformation in my head is niice, just need to throw cash at it ... just you wait ;)

Thanks,
Paul

#96097 It's been a while! I've revived my EG!
Going to get straight to it and show you a few pics ! (Apologies for lack of detail, they're all off the mobile! :p)

After a lot of caution and grew me a pair of nuts to attempt to change the head gasket for the first time, I finally did it!

Pics of the engine bay before removing the head & with valve cover off!

Image

Removing the rad completely gave me a nice bit of space to actually stand inside my engine bay! Also marked the cam belt positioning and the distributor on the other side so I can place it back exactly!
Image
Image

Had some nervous moments when removing the fuel line(s), was not sure what to expect really, until it happened. Yep, fuel started seeping out, so I quickly tightened bolt, then was told you are to expect a bit to come out then it should stop! So I just went back to it and took it off with plenty of kitchen role! :D

Gotta love previous owners and their ways! (Anyone got an induction kit for sale for me? :)
Image

Here's my cylinder head off the block with the intake manifold still attached! In my opinion, with the environment that I was in, I thought it was best to take the head off with the intake still attached! Was a little annoying that when you think, 'Ok, I've removed each bolt, each connection, each hose, it's ready to lift....nope, two hidden bolts on the support bracket! Got it off eventually!

Makes life easier to separate the two when out of the engine bay!

Gotta love how an old cooker comes in handy!

Pics of the devil itself! Was literally on the verge of falling to pieces!

Image
Image

Compared with New!
Image

Took the head to get skimmed. Whilst it was away, I got on with cleaning the block.

Before cleaning commenced! Water/oil and just bits of crap from old head gasket around the cylinders and inside.
Image
Oil/Water soaked out and I had started to smooth off the edges!
Image

Cleaned! Piston heads, cylinders all cleaned, edges all smoothed off!

Image

Next morning, picked up my cylinder head! Skimmed with precision, check her out!

Image
Image

Put her all back together with no real trouble. Changed oil & oil filter, fresh water/anti-freeze! New spark plugs! She fired up beautifully!

I've driven her to the garage where I used to work where she's now getting prepped for re-spray!

First are a few pics of her body getting a facelift & stripped! All the little dents, rust all being sorted out! (Father hard at work! Ha!)

Image

Gotta love wheel arch rust! So much of it ate her, a metal plate was needed for when I fit the rear bumper back on!

(No, he isn't posing ladies!)

I'm now back at work, so I won't have pics of it being prepped or anything, but will have pics for when it's being put back together all sprayed and polished for some driving! With any luck it's this Saturday!

Apologies for the amount of pics in one post!

#96098 I picked my car up on the Friday from the garage after it got resprayed on the Monday! Really chuffed with it! Here are the pics of the process it went through whilst being sprayed!

First we begin with the scotch/prep work!

Next stage, the primer!

Stage after primer is the base coat!

After that is the finish coat of the paint+lacquer

Unfortunately I don't have pics of her in the flesh as of yet, she's already covered in salt and other crap from the road surfaces! I can't clean her properly for about 1-2months as the paint is still soft, can't wait until I can though.

Mean while I got on with sorting one of my other main problems out! The racket coming from the exhaust. I had my straight through pipe removed and another pipe with two boxes fitted. 1 box at the front, the 2nd in the center. (Don't have many pics of this unfortunately as my phone decided to run out of battery).

Image

Here is my problem that attracted the wrong impression, and did she make a noise ....
Image
Image

Now she sounds lush, just how I like it! Not to mention everyone else.
Also one of the backbox holders was rattling up against part of the chassis which obviously made the noise horrendously worse!

As I progress, will keep you updated. Can't wait to move onto suspension & wheels, she needs them!
